The High Line was built in the 1930s and lifted freight trains 30 feet off the streets, but no trains have used the tracks since 1980. When demolition was threatened in the late 1990s, Friends of the High Line, a community-based non-profit group, was formed, and now works in partnership with the City of New York to preserve and maintain the structure as an elevated public park.

Highly recommended for visitors to – and residents of – New York!
