church of St Francis-Xavier, originally uploaded by gb2g.

The church of St. Francis Xavier on Shangchuan Island (also written as Sancian). The island is in the South China Sea, about 14 km from mainland China. The island’s name comes from São João – Saint John in Portuguese.

It is most known for having been the place of death of St. Francis Xavier in 1552.

I didn’t know until I looked it up that tomorrow, December 3rd, is actually the anniversary of his death – but I had already written the entry and didn’t want to wait to post it!

Enjoy today’s photo! If you like the photo, please drop a comment to the original photographer at Flickr.
