Eastern Bluebird, originally uploaded by Bill D114.

This is a male eastern bluebird – apparently they do live in southern Canada but I have never seen one.

Wikipedia informs me that in the mid-1900s, the population was in serious decline due to habitat destruction and nest predation by non-native species (such as the house sparrow and the European starling) but birding enthusiasts built nesting boxes for bluebirds and monitored them to keep the other species out.

You can read about the symbolism of the bluebird of happiness at Wikipedia, too.

Enjoy today’s photo! If you like the photo, please drop a comment to the original photographer at Flickr.
