OKAPI, originally uploaded by Chesterclose2.

Okapi! I saw some at the San Diego Zoo last week, and was immediately in love!

According to wiki, the okapi “is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Africa. Although the Okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of the zebra, it is most closely related to the giraffe. There are approximately 10,000 – 20,000 in the wild and only 40 different worldwide institutions display them.”

Totally cute! I should have bought a plush one at the gift shop!!

Enjoy today’s photo! If you like the photo, please drop a comment to the original photographer at Flickr.

Bizarrely, I’m not sure I remember seeing one before! And then today, not only do you post this, but ‘okapi’ was an answer in a crossword. It’s clearly Okapi Day. Thank you for picking it!
