Library Geometry, originally uploaded by Kurlylox1 (Back from Beijing).

When I first saw it, I wasn’t sure what was a photo of, but it’s the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building! Isn’t it amazing? The artwork is actually mosaic – incredible stuff. (The original photographer notes that the figure in the background between the columns is Minerva. Cool stuff.

But everything looks perfect from far away, originally uploaded by Zenith Phuong.

A row of chimney pots. More interestingly, though, is the title given to the photo by the original photographer: But everything looks perfect from far away.

Millefiori Stud, originally uploaded by portableantiquities.

This “millefiori” stud is just one of the objects in the so-called “Staffordshire Hoard”. The hoard of 7th and 8th centure Anglo-Saxon objects was originally discovered by metal detectorist Terry Herbert in July 2009 and was excavated by Birmingham University Archaeology Unit and Staffordshire County Council.

You can see the entire set here, and I recommend that you do – it’s pretty amazing.

Images used courtesy of the Staffordshire hoard website.

With thanks to my friend, fellow history geek, and author Heather Domin for the heads-up.

Gayla’s Preserved Crab Apples, originally uploaded by the workroom.

It’s fall! (At least, it is in North America.) And tis the season to preserve and can! This week I attended my first preserving party – we made apple-pear sauce.

But check out these luminous canned crabapples! (With pickled asparagus and preserved lemons in the background.)

How inspiring!

past the knot, originally uploaded by barbarianqueen.

There’s a lot of great visual interest in this shot – the texture of the wood and the colour of the ladybug just work perfectly!
