Roman Masterpiece, originally uploaded by Imapix.

This is the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct and road, in the south of France. According to Wikipedia (I know, I know!) it had long been thought that it was built around the year 19 BC, but newer excavations suggest the construction may have taken place in the middle of the first century A.D.

The bridge is 49 meters high and the longest level is 275 meters long.

I’ve been there! Although my photos were nothing like as gorgeous. There’s fabulous Roman graffiti etched into the stone, too.
