St Valentine’s relics in Rome, originally uploaded by Lawrence OP.

Today’s photo is of the relics (skull and bones) of Saint Valentine, martyr. (You can read more about the history – or lack thereof – at Wiki or click on the photo to read the original poster’s notes.) (Or, for laughs, check out this first-hand account of his martyrdom.)

I love the close, tight window of the photo, the level gaze of the skull, and the dramatic black background.

If you’re more into Roman feasts and festivities than Roman martyrs, you can read up on Lupercalia, also celebrated this weekend.

Enjoy today’s photo! If you like the photo, please drop a comment to the original photographer at Flickr.
